Joint pain and arthritis are caused by a swelling around the joints. The cause is not well know but some feel it is hereditary, and injuries can be a cause and so is gout.

When losing weight it will help take the pressure off the joints, thus causing a little less pain. Diet and exercise can make a person more comfortable and make day to day living a little less painful.

A person needs vitamins, nutrients, and minerals so a good way to get started is to eat healthy. Eating this way will keep everything in balance.The best way to do this is to eat the food groups, getting vegetables, milk, fruit, beans and other proteins will help. Remember to not eat when you are not hungry and to eat when you are hungry.

Losing weight will come naturally when you eat right, thus increasing your energy level. The weight loss will cause less pressure on the joints thus making you feel better. This will need to be a life time habit, not just a temporary one.

Exercise is a very important part of the treatment for arthritis and joint pain. A person cannot hurt themselves any further by exercising. This will actually give you some relief. Moderate exercise will actually reduce swelling and joint pain. It also builds muscles around the joints and reduces stiffness. It will help with being more flexible and you will have a better endurance.

Start with something easy like walking, biking, etc. If you are afraid to do these then consider water walking or swimming. These are all great ways to start an exercise program. Going on the internet you can even find suggested exercises that will help you. If you are a golfer then golf. Some people like yoga. Starting off with stretching exercises will get you ready for your workout.

Discuss what you plan on doing with your doctor. Some doctors will prescribe physical therapy to teach you the best exercises and may offer you some devices so you do not cause addition stress on the joints. We must get all the information so we can take proper care of ourselves.

It is very important to take care of yourself. This disease is not going to go away. There is over the counter pain medicine and ointments and lotions to help with the pain. A person must experiment and decide what works best for them. Be consistent, do not eat well one day and not the next. Exercise on a regular basis or you will not help yourself. This is a chronic disease and a person needs to do the best they can to have control over their illness.

Making a plan of action is very important. Write down what foods you need to buy and what exercise you will do at least 4 times a week. Now look at what you wrote and go shopping and buy it. Next start on your exercise plan and check it off as you do it. This will help you follow your plan and soon it will be your new lifestyle.
